Symptoms of acute leukemia

Reduced bone marrow function:

  • Bleeding (petechiae, hematomas)
  • Fever/infections
  • Anemia symptoms (fatigue, paleness, malaise)
  • Bone pain (expansion of bone marrow)

Infiltration of blasts into other tissue:

  • Lymph node tumor
  • Enlarged liver and/or spleen
  • Kidney infiltration
  • Mediastinal tumor with or without respiratory problems
  • Swelling of testicle

If there is CNS involvement (blasts in spinal fluid):

  • Headache
  • Double vision
  • Abnormalities in cranial nerves

Vague symptoms and signs are the rule, and often repeated infections over time occur before the suspicion of leukemia arises. None of the findings at the clinical examination is pathognomonic.
