Etiology of peritoneal cancer

Cancer in the peritoneum is due to tumor cells from a primary tumor reaching the peritoneum and implanting. The cells spread in the abdominal cavity by gravity and follows the reabsoroption of ascities initially (redistribution phenomenon).

Tumor is found typically in the omentum, subhepatically, under the right diaphragm, paracolic gutters, pouch of Douglas (by the rectosimoidal transition), and in women on the ovaries.

Asbestos exposure may be a risk factor for mesothelioma.
