Differential diagnoses of bone sarcoma

Benign bone tumors

  • Chrondroblastoma, enchondroma, osteochondroma
  • Osteoma, osteoid osteoma, osteoblastoma
  • Hemangioma, lymphangioma
  • Giant cell tumor

Bone dysplasia, development disturbances, and non-neoplastic proliferations

  • Fibrous dysplasia, non-ossificating bone fibroma
  • Simple bone cyst, aneurysmal bone cyst, ganglion cyst
  • Langerhans cell histocytosis/eosinophile granuloma

Infection and inflammation

  • Osteomyelitis, spondylitis, synovitis, arthritis

Traumatic reaction

  • Callus, stress fracture

Bone metastases

Bone metastases from:
  • breast cancer
  • prostate cancer
  • lung cancer
  • kidney cancer
  • malignant melanoma

Cancer in the blood and lymph system

  • Myelomatous/plasmocytoma and lymphoma in the bone. Plasma cell neoplasia is more common as primary cancer in the bone than sarcoma.
